As you begin thinking about what you’d like to do better, differently, or maybe just start doing this year, be sure to implement two important steps:
1. Be SMART about it. Be sure your goals are:
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Aligned
R – Realistic
T – Time-Bound
I read somewhere that “a goal without a plan is just a dream.” The SMART process will help you put your goal into some measurable, tangible steps so you’ll have a strong action plan.
2. Be Accountable to Someone
In November, a good friend of mine, Bruce Johnson asked me to be his “accountability partner” as he worked to grow his business. After thinking about it, I agreed. To help each other stay on track with goals, Bruce developed a secret website where each day we post our goals for the day. At the end of the day, we go back and cross things off the list. It’s been a phenomenal experience for me as now that I know someone is watching, I’m motivated to stay busy. Rather than lay in the hotel room and watch TV when I’m on the road, I’ll turn it off and get busy doing some work. I probably accomplished more in the past few months than I did the rest of year! He’s found the process helpful as well. When you know somebody is checking your progress, you’ll have a new sense of motivation to keep it going.
Because I’m so excited to put this plan into process, I’m going to share my 2012 goal with you.
My goal is to read one book per week this entire year.
You can see my goal by clicking HERE but I’ll summarize. I’ll be reading professional books and to show my accountability, I’m going to email out a summary of the book so you’ll know I’ve read it. I’ll allow myself a couple of “fun” books but 95% will be professional development. I’m excited to see how I will grow professionally this year.
What About You?
I’d like you to share in this journey. If you’re serious about your 2012 goal, why not join me? If you want to, here’s what to do:
- Go to this link and download a goal form. You can download mine to use as a go-by.
- Sign up HERE to commit to the process. You’ll share your professional development goal with me and I’ll be emailing you an encouraging reminder each month.
- At the end of the year, we’ll celebrate and I’ll call you to interview you and if you like, share your results with my readership.
Are you in? I hope so. Let’s all make 2012 our best year yet!
