The Power of Passion

This past week we went to my son’s Back to School night at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD. Now this is a top-notch school, state-of-the-art in every way (and expensive as all get-out which means lots more road trips in the next few years) but what impressed us was the enthusiasm of the teachers.
Being passionate about what you do leads to enthusiasm, and the enthusiasm is contagious. My son’s religious studies teacher was beside herself with excitement as she talked about the curriculum for the year. His Spanish teacher switched between Spanish and English with rapid-fire explanations of the materials. Even his math teacher seemed pumped up. In a strange way, it almost made me wish I could go back to school!
As you know, I’m passionate about developing the next great generation of managers. Sometimes when I get in front of a group of new supervisors or administrative assistants, I can hardly contain my excitement when I lead workshops – and this doesn’t come from my pre-workshop cocktail of Red Bull, 5-Hour Energy, and a large Dunkin’ Donuts coffee! Being able to do what I love and get paid to do it is wonderful. It’s what I wish for all of you.
So what are you passionate about? Has your fire gone out? If so, why not refocus on the dreams you had before life took over. When my son was graduating from the 5th Grade, the class listed out their dreams. Some wanted to be professional athletes, doctors, nurses, military, lawyers, etc. Not one said they wanted to have a dead-end job with a meaningless career, an ugly wife, lazy husband, and bad kids. Yet that’s exactly where some may wind up. Without a dream, passion is non-existent. It’s like moving on a treadmill.
This week, why not take the time to refocus and rediscover the passion. If it’s gone, start thinking about how to turn things around. My favorite line from one of my favorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption, says it all:
Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’…
What are you waiting for?
